# How to read a NYS contractor registry record — ny-contractor-registry-records

> What the certificate of registration is, what the answers on record mean, and what the file does not contain.

## How to read these records

### The certificate

A certificate of registration is issued by the Bureau of Public Work and Prevailing Wage Enforcement of the New
York State Department of Labor (Labor Law section 220-i). It has a number ending in “-CR”, an issue date and an
expiration date two years later. Every certificate in the file has the status Active.

### The answers on record

To register, a business answers questions: does it have a state employer registration number, a Workers'
Compensation Board number, workers' compensation insurance; is it associated with an apprenticeship program; does it
have outstanding wage assessments, a debarment, a final determination for a labor, tax or safety violation. The
record shows these answers as the registry holds them.

- They are answers at the time of registration, not a current audit.
- A “Yes” does not say when, why, or whether it was resolved; a “No” is not a clean bill of health.
- No page of this site lists businesses by these answers.

### MWBE owned

The answer given in the contractor registry. It is not the MWBE certification of Empire State Development, which
has its own directory.

### What is not here

The names of a business's officers and its phone number, both in the state file, are not republished. Certificates
issued after Oct 1, 2026, and registrations that ended, are not in the file.
